Background
The Ljubljana Puppet Theatre Festival first hosted puppeteers from all over the world in 1933. Fifty years later in 1983 the organisation hosted the second international conference on the training of professional puppeteers. In 1992, Ljubljana Puppet Theatre organised the 16th Congress of the International Union of the Marionette (UNIMA) in Ljubljana.
LUTKE builds on this tradition by bringing together artists, companies, students and professionals from Slovenia and abroad, providing a platform for artistic exchange and reflection on contemporary puppetry practices.
Programme
The main premise of festival’s selection revolves around daring, challenging, provocative, inspiring and above all high quality puppet performances with an international dimension.
Featured productions frequently explore the intersections of puppetry with animation, visual arts, movement, music and new technologies, reflecting the evolving nature of contemporary puppetry practice.
The festival brings together puppet theatres, independent artists, collectives and educational institutions from across Europe and beyond, offering Slovenian audiences insight into a wide range of contemporary puppetry traditions and artistic practices.
In recent years, LUTKE has continued to strengthen its role as an international platform for contemporary puppetry, presenting works that address current social, cultural and environmental themes while encouraging experimentation and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
